International Women’s Day: Why Climate Change Is a Women’s Issue

Every year on March 8th, we celebrate International Women’s Day – a time to recognise the achievements of women around the world and rally for gender equality. But here at PlanetPlay, we also know that gender equality isn’t just about wages, representation, and opportunity – it’s also about environmental justice. Because when it comes to climate change, women are on the frontlines.

Climate change isn’t just about rising temperatures or melting ice caps. It’s about real people, real struggles, and real inequalities. And here’s the hard truth: women – especially those in developing countries – are disproportionately affected. Why? Because they are more likely to rely on natural resources for their livelihoods, have fewer economic opportunities, and often bear the responsibility of securing food, water, and fuel for their families. When these resources become scarce due to droughts, floods, or extreme weather, it’s women who have to walk farther, work harder, and face greater risks.

In fact, according to the United Nations, 80% of people displaced by climate change are women. That’s a staggering statistic. It means women are more vulnerable to food insecurity, loss of income, and even violence as they’re forced to migrate in search of safety and stability.

Despite being hit the hardest, women are often excluded from key climate discussions and decision-making processes. Whether it's government policies or local sustainability initiatives, women’s voices are still under-represented. Yet, studies show that when women lead on climate action, communities are better prepared and more resilient.

At PlanetPlay we believe that gender equality and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. The fight for gender equality is also the fight for a healthier planet. This International Women’s Day, let’s stand together and ensure that climate solutions are as inclusive as they are impactful. As we’re proving here at PlanetPlay, women aren’t just facing climate change – they’re leading the way in helping to solve it.

Happy International Women’s Day! Let’s make change happen.
