In a regular series, we take a deeper dive into a whole host of issues, topics and initiatives around the climate challenge. Here, we take a trip to Davos (pictured) to find out what this week’s World Economic Forum’s Annual meeting is all about…
What is the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting?
It brings together influential leaders from politics, business, technology, academia, and the wider society. Held annually in Davos, Switzerland, (this year Jan 20-24) the summit aims to address global challenges such as economic instability, social inequity, and environmental crises.
Why is the Annual Meeting important for tackling climate challenges?
Climate action has become a central theme of the WEF Annual Meeting in recent years. With climate change impacting all aspects of society, the event provides a critical platform for discussing innovative solutions, such as leveraging technology to mitigate climate impacts. Games, of course, should be part of this discourse, which is why PlanetPlay is attending.
Who attends the event?
The event attracts an audience of over 2,000 participants, including Heads of State, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, renowned academics, and representatives from NGOs and international organisations. While traditionally dominated by policymakers and business leaders, the meeting increasingly welcomes voices from younger generations and grassroots movements to ensure diverse perspectives are included – something PlanetPlay very much welcomes.
How does the games industry fit into Davos discussions?
With its reach of over 3 billion players globally, the video games industry is emerging as a vital player in the climate dialogue. Our industry can inspire sustainable behaviour, drive environmental awareness, and contribute to global climate goals through initiatives like our own Make Green Tuesday Moves.
What can we expect from this year’s meeting?
The 2025 meeting will focus on integrating sustainability into every industry and accelerating cross-sector collaboration to combat the climate crisis. With themes like green technology innovation and equitable resource distribution, Davos will help set the tone for the year’s climate discussions.
