2025-01-10
We’re back with the second part of our guide to the key environmental, sustainability, and green events that we hope will encourage global action and awareness in 2025. If you missed our look at the dates to mark in your diaries in January to June, you can find it here. Here, we look at what to consider in the second half of the year…
July
Plastic-Free July (Month-Long): A global movement that challenges individuals, businesses, and communities to reduce single-use plastic waste throughout the month. Participants are encouraged to make small but impactful changes, such as using reusable bags, bottles, and containers. The goal is to reduce plastic pollution and inspire long-term sustainable habits.
August
Earth Overshoot Day (TBD): This marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources exceeds what Earth can regenerate in a year. The term ‘overshoot’ represents the level by which human population's demand overshoots the sustainable number of biological resources regenerated on Earth.
September
Zero Emissions Day/World Car Free Day (22): A day dedicated to reducing global carbon emissions. Opt for a car-free day, avoid energy-intensive activities, and spread the message of clean energy.
World Rivers Day (28): This celebrates the importance of rivers in supporting ecosystems, providing water for agriculture, and sustaining human communities. It is a day to advocate for river conservation, clean water initiatives, and sustainable water management practices.
October
World Habitat Day (6): This UN initiative focuses on shelter and urban development issues, emphasising sustainable cities and communities. Engage in local clean-up campaigns or advocate for greener urban planning.
November
COP30 (Dates TBD): The 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) will address critical climate actions. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to support global climate commitments.
December
International Day of Clean Energy (26): This day emphasises the shift toward renewable energy sources. Promote clean energy use or join initiatives advocating for sustainable energy policies.
Every month in 2025 offers a chance to connect with causes that champion the environment and sustainability. We can all use these awareness dates as inspiration to plan activities, engage with our communities, and make a difference for our planet.
