London Fashion Week comes to an end today (September 17th) and, as ever, questions continue to be raised about how the sector can become more green – and Fashion United spotlights the issue, claiming British Fashion Struggles with Sustainability. Although Oxfam, Vinted and eBay hosted ‘pre-loved’ shows during the Week, the article highlights that the rest of the fashion world is ‘lagging behind’: “A recent CFJ (Collective Fashion Justice) report found that just seven of the 206 members of the British Fashion Council (BFC), which organises London Fashion Week, had set out targets to reduce their carbon emissions. And only five of these — or less than 2.5 percent — had goals aligned with the 2016 Paris Agreement to cut global warming, CFJ said.” You can read more here.
Cannes Lion – the international event for marketing and advertising professionals – had sustainability on the agenda for brands when it took place earlier this year, as discussed by Extreme Reach in its round-up article. The company’s Simon Sikorski, President of Global Operations, said: “Advertising has an amazing role to play in getting the message out and helping consumers make informed choices when opting for sustainable brands and practices. Sustainability is not just a passion but a business advantage.” Find out more here.
If you needed any more reason to look seriously at the climate crisis, a number of news outlets have recently reported on a significant event that took place last year. Euronews sums it up in its headline: Climate change triggered a mega-tsunami that caused the earth to vibrate for nine days’. It reveals that for over a week last September, seismometers around the world detected mysterious vibrations… the cause was eventually discovered – a massive climate change triggered landslide in Greenland. You can learn more about it here.
Kudos to Microsoft, which has bought 234,000 rainforest restoration carbon removal credits, according to ESG Today. According to the report, with the purchase Microsoft will be able to further offset its production of carbon. In addition, teaming up with Toroto, a company that develops projects to enhance and restore ecosystems and reduce the impact of climate change, the move will help drive forward ecosystem restoration of up to 47,000 hectares of tropical rainforest.
