At PlanetPlay we are fortunate to work alongside some of the most forward-thinking leaders in our industry and beyond, bringing their expertise and passion to our mission of harnessing the power of games for environmental impact.
As part of an ongoing Meet Our Advisory Board series, we sat down with Martin Sibille, VP and Global Head of PC/Console Publishing at Tencent Games/Level Infinite, to discuss why he joined the PlanetPlay movement, the unique ways games create reflection and agency among players to help foster change, and how other studios can start, or scale, their sustainability journey…
As someone leading global publishing strategy at one of the world’s biggest games companies, how do you see the role of the games industry evolving in the face of the climate crisis?
Games are one of the most powerful cultural forces today. That gives us a unique opportunity to inspire climate awareness at scale without sacrificing fun. By weaving sustainability naturally into gameplay, we can engage players emotionally and meaningfully, making green choices feel rewarding rather than preachy.
What makes video games such a powerful medium for raising awareness and inspiring real-world environmental action compared to other entertainment industries?
Games are interactive, immersive and personal. Unlike film or TV, players make decisions and see consequences unfold in real time. This makes them uniquely positioned to foster empathy, raise awareness, and simulate real-world environmental challenges and solutions. Games create space for reflection and agency, two essential ingredients for sparking real-world change.
You’ve worked closely with studios across global markets. Have you seen a growing appetite from developers or players to engage with sustainability themes?
Absolutely. There’s growing interest in exploring environmental themes whether through storytelling, game mechanics, or real-world impact features. Likewise, players – especially Gen Z – are increasingly choosing experiences that align with their values. The demand is there; our job is to meet it authentically and creatively. Giving players choices and agency while respecting the fun.
What excites you most about PlanetPlay’s Make Green Moves initiative and why did you choose to support PlanetPlay as an Advisory Board member?
What excites me most is that PlanetPlay offers a practical, scalable way for studios to embed sustainability, without compromising gameplay or commercial goals. But beyond the model itself, I’ve been genuinely impressed by the commitment and drive of the PlanetPlay team. They’re not just advocating for change, they’re building the tools to make it happen. That passion and clarity of purpose is exactly why I chose to join the Advisory Board.
In your experience, how can publishers and platform holders integrate green content in a way that both resonates with players and supports long-term business goals?
The key is thoughtful integration. Green content should feel natural to the game, enhancing, not interrupting, the experience. And above all, we need to respect players: give them choice, create space for reflection, and empower them with agency. When players feel in control, they’re more likely to engage deeply. Done right, sustainability becomes a driver of both player connection and long-term value.
What advice would you give to other industry leaders or studios considering how to start, or scale, their sustainability journey through games?
Start small, but start. Whether it's reducing emissions, adding green in-game assets, or partnering with platforms like PlanetPlay, the important thing is to begin. Players are paying attention, and the studios that act early will be the ones shaping the future of our industry.
